What do we hope to achieve?
Our overall aims
- To encourage homeowners to renovate their home to improve its performance, rather than to simply make it look better
- To show New Zealand how much better we can live with warm, dry and healthy homes
- To prove these benefits by monitoring how the homes perform both before and after renovation
- To demonstrate that sustainable homes can reduce New Zealand’s carbon emissions
New tools and guidelines
Using the experience of undertaking the renovations and the results from the monitoring, we will develop:
- Tools and guidelines for builders and other tradespeople that show how to achieve the standards set in Beacon’s HSS High Standard of Sustainability®
- An industry tool to enable the renovation/retrofit sector to undertake detailed evaluations of homes for the purposes of costing and implementation of the sustainable renovation
- A tool for consumers to find out the most suitable renovation options for their house type, circumstances and household makeup
- Guidelines for local councils to implement the best possible policy mechanisms to promote sustainable new and renovated buildings
- Value cases that prove the economic, health, social and environmental benefits of sustainable renovations
